When this pandemic hit, just about everything changed for us in the space of two weeks. I found myself unexpectedly, but understandably, laid off.
I found out last Monday that my position was eliminated. I told my wife, “We’ll figure this out. God is faithful. I believe we’ll succeed.” Then I wept.
The next morning I woke up and decided, “I can either grieve or use this as an example to my children of what unwavering faith in trying times looks like.” I came downstairs, decided to make myself some coffee, and started job searching. I was mentally, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted.
My best friend and long time business partner Evan called. We share a hobby – roasting and brewing specialty coffee – and a deep faith. He prayed with me on the phone, and then said, “Hey…what if we start that coffee company we’ve always talked about, and for every bag sold, donate a bag to someone who has just lost their job – like you?” We got on the phone, and in 24 hours www.richbarnroasters.com was born. We both have intensive experience in tech, so decided we’d run our coffee company the way we would run a tech company. On our first day of business we sold over 40 bags of coffee, and within a week our social media posts had over 50,000 views.
When we get an order, the buyer either designates the recipient for the donation bag, or we pull from a list of names we have. Then we deliver the coffee to their doorstep with a note and pray over each bag.
What I’ve learned in this season is that it’s all about perspective. I decided I could wake up in the morning and be frustrated and angry and scared about losing my job. Or I could wake up with an attitude of gratitude for the many blessings I still have. Evan and I can’t help every person in our city who has lost their job, but we can bring hope to a few of them.
